How Much Should I charge for an Online Ad?
I started a blog, and just received an inquiry from a company wishing to advertise with me (yay!) But I have no idea what to charge them. They are my first, so should I cut them a deal? What do you think? A flat monthly fee?

Additional Details

Thanks for the feedback, but like what figure do I start with??

  • Firstly, do some quick research to find out how much other sites would charge for a similar ad.

Make out like you want to place an ad on some sites in a similar niche as your own, just to get a feel for the appropriate price. Try three sites and use an average as your guide.

I would suggest a monthly fee but also offer a bulk discount for an up front payment e.g. 6 months, 1 year, 2 year etc. with a greater discount for the longer the ad runs. Also make sure the ad doesn't harm the integrity of your blog (short term pain for long term gain).

    Good luck

  • Depends whereabouts the ad would be located and how much you think that space is worth. An idea can be obtained by seeing how much you could earn through Adsense. Any Ad replacing your Adsense would have to make more. The thing is you have a finite amount of space in which to show adverts, although your total income could increase by basing it on your visitor numbers. Another idea is to have rotating banners/ads. That is an ad will be featured, say, 1 in 4 page loads. That gives you four ads in the same space. Althought the advertiser will get 1/4 of your page loads. An advertiser will usually know how much he wants to spend based on page loads and what the subject matter is. As an example have a look at my advertising page http://advertising.shareworld.co.uk/
If you click the "pricing" link you can see what we charge. Bear in mind we are a financial site so the prices relate to that subject .
I think the best approach is to try and get into discussion with them. Some advertisers will give your site credibility and others will help you out with content. It could be a mutual thing.
  • Size, type, shape, if it changes or animates? These all mount up to how much you should charge.

Will it draw attention away from your blog too much? Charge them high or by your visitor base per month if your blog is getting more attention per day.

Virus check!!!! some of these adds will send visuses to another pc if you go with a shody company.

Hyper links, Check where it is going and if you aprove of the message, your fan base might think you have other agendas if it shows shooting rabbits for a iPhone
  • It depends on the traffic levels of your blog. I would charge them a flat monthly fee, ask something high and then let them bargain you down.
  • You should do your research, look at what other sites charge. Secondly charge on a monthly basis - good income for you and don't copy some of those sites charging one-off.
  • The best thing is to put a high price but do mention it's negotiable so you don't lose them.
