Why has a barcode been stuck to our letterbox?

Someone has pasted a barcode on to our letterbox - is this to check our postman or some other more sinister reason?

I have no idea why anyone would do that except as a joke. Having said that, perhaps barcodes on letterboxes is the way of the future.... I can see some good uses for them there ;)
